Team up with some friends, your teacher and an engineer to build your idea and compete for the national championship!

Regional winning teams will compete in Washington, D.C. during National Engineer's Week, February 22-28, 2004. The deadline for entering the Regional Competition is October 15, 2003*. To register, contact the regional coordinator listed below. Future updates will be announced by August of 2003.

The National Engineers Week Future City Competition offers students a fun way to learn about engineering and cities of the future. Through the program, students will:
  • Work as a team under the guidance of a teacher and a practicing engineer.
  • Apply their knowledge to real world situations.
  • See firsthand how engineers turn ideas into reality.
  • Use a popular award-winning computer game, SimCity 3000, to design their future city.
  • Build a scale model of a city section.
  • Write a 500-word essay on an assigned engineering topic.

 

 

The Future City Competition is both a challenge and an adventure! The rewards are many for all involved.

Students:
-Apply their knowledge through an integrated, multi-disciplinary project.
-Learn the value of science, math, & technology standards.
-Receive mentorship as they learn first-hand how engineers do their job.
-Gain confidence communicating their project research, procedures and ideas.
-Learn about the complexity of their city.

Teachers:
-Reinforce curricula in a new, unique way.
-Expand knowledge of engineering and technology by interaction with mentors.
-Enhance rapport with students.

Engineer-Mentors:
-Influence students to explore engineering and technology fields.
-Build school-industry rapport.
-Contribute to local education.
-Have fun working with students!
