Indiana FIRST LEGO League Jr. Information

Focused on building an interest in science and engineering in children ages 6-10, FIRST LEGO League Jr. is a hands-on program designed to capture young children's curiosity and direct it toward discovering how science and technology impact the world around them.Teams consist of two to six children and are guided by two adult coaches.

Kids and coaches design a Lego model of their solution that includes simple machines and motors. The team showcases their design at a local Expo event, where they display and share what they learned and designed.

WHAT: a fun program for young children ages 6-10 that introduces basic design and research skills. The program culminates in the opportunity to attend a FIRST LEGO League Jr. Expo. General information about the program, team structure, events, registration, challenge materials needed and offered by Lego Education.

HOW: To be a team, you need to register at FIRST's national website. Team registration fee is $50.00 and must be paid with a credit card. To register at the national website go to www.usfirst.org. This will allow the coaches access to the site for Challenge information and information about LEGO kits that are available for ordering. (Please note any LEGOS are acceptable, it is not necessary to purchase a kit. The kit may be helpful since each model must include one moving part and one simple machine). Duplos are not acceptable.

The Program: FIRST LEGO League Jr. is not a competition. The program focuses on allowing children to learn, collaborate and have fun. Team members will conduct research which will be presented on the Show Me poster and build a model (which includes one moving part and one simple machine). During this time, they will learn to collaborate, do simple research, and apply basic engineering skills to build a model. Click the 2016 Challenge for more information.
