The Association for Computing Machinery was founded in 1947 as the world's first scientific & educational computing society. Its special interest groups sponsor conferences, publish journals, magazines & newsletters as well as sponsor numerous computer science events. The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating & Air Conditioning Engineers was founded in 1894 with the mission on advancing the science of heating, ventilation, air conditioning & refrigeration through research, writing, publishing & continuing education. The Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers was founded in 1963. IEEE is a professional association for the advancement of technology in areas such as: aerospace systems, computers & telecommunications, biomedical engineering, electric power & consumer electronics. The National Society of Black Engineers was founded in 1971 and is one of the largest student-managed organizations in the country. The Society of Automotive Engineers was founded in 1905 to promote the use of standards of the automobile industry. The Society of Manufacturing Engineers was founded in the early 1930's. SME is recognized by manufacturing practitioners, companies and other organizations, as a source for information, education and networking. The Society of Women Engineers was founded in 1950 to serve as a center of information on women in engineering. Tau Alpha Pi is the national honor society for engineering technology. Founded in 1953 and managed for more than 30 years by engineering technology educator Frederick J.
